Action plan to prevent fire accidents in city

Staff Reporter

Six teams to visit at least 100 high-rises in the city

Bangalore: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, along with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, is all set to prepare an action plan with regard to fire safety measures in place in the various high rises in the city.

This is following the High Court of Karnataka directive. Recently, the High Court took the BBMP to task for failing to ensure that fire safety measures were in place in the multi-storeyed buildings in the city. This was while hearing a public interest litigation petition regarding the Carlton Towers fire incident which claimed nine lives.

Following the High Court directive, Commissioner Siddaiah chaired a meeting along with officials from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and BBMP's Town Planning Department. The meeting decided to submit an affidavit of the action plan to the High Court soon.

The meeting also decided to form six teams comprising officials from both Department of Fire and Emergency Services and BBMP. The teams will visit at least 100 high rises in the city, conduct an inspection on the safety measures in place and submit a report on the same within three days. Periodic inspections of the multi-storeyed buildings would also be conducted henceforth.
