‘Government departments should create awareness' Students should register for eye donation: Minister Bangalore: Minister for Social Welfare A. Narayanaswamy on Thursday said it was the duty of all government departments to create awareness about the implementation of the National Programme for Control of Blindness to detect eye defects among people in tribal areas and villages. Releasing a souvenir on the 4 {+t} {+h} State level conference-2011 and science workshop organised by the Karnataka State Ophthalmic Assistants Association, the Minister suggested that students and government employees should register their names for eye donation. He said that more awareness was needed on the importance of organ donation. Director of Health and Family Welfare Sumedha R. Desai, Director of Medical Education A.R. Aruna, Minto Regional Ophthalmic Centre Director Sriprakash and Dalit Sangharsh Samiti President Mavalli Shankar were present. Karnataka State Government Employees Association President L. Bhyrappa presided over the function. Upgradation Association honorary president S. Raju urged the Government to upgrade the post of Chief Ophthalmic Assistants to gazetted rank and raise the number of posts to 30 and shift those serving in primary health centres for more than 15 years to district and taluk hospitals on priority. The association presented a memorandum to the Minister, demanding among other things, changing nomenclature of ophthalmic assistant to ophthalmic officer and giving diploma scale of pay to those assistants with diploma certificates.
