Two held for trying to smuggle red sanders

VELLORE: Two persons, Babu (40) and Venugopal (40) of Nallagavaniyur village near Paradarami in Gudiyatham forest range, were arrested by a forest department team at their village on Wednesday in connection with their attempt to smuggle red Sanders wood in Veerachettipalli Reserve Forest (RF).

According to T.V. Manjunatha, District Forest Officer, Vellore, a team of Forest personnel found four persons in the dark when they were patrolling on Tuesday. But the four escaped on seeing them. The forest personnel who went to the spot found that the culprits had cut two red sanders trees into two pieces each weighing about 250 kg and valued at about Rs.50,000.

The arrested were remanded to judicial custody on Thursday.
