Plea to protect water bodies

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: Anti Corruption Movement–Coimbatore district unit has appealed to the Coimbatore Corporation to ensure better upkeep and protection of the eight water bodies that it has recently taken over.

Secretary of the Movement, N.K. Velu, in a memorandum said the conditions of these water bodies were highly deplorable. There was unabated dumping of debris on the bunds and into the tanks. This was resulting in the water holding area shrinking rapidly.

At this rate, these water bodies would soon turn into play grounds, vehicle parking areas or slums. Sewage water and chemical waste from dyeing units flow into the tanks. This would pollute the ground water table and result in the ground water being unfit for consumption or for growing plants. The movement also pointed out that there were many encroachments of water bodies.

Water bodies were the life line of Coimbatore and its neighbourhood. If not checked now, the city and its peripheral areas would turn parched very soon. Mr.Velu said that upkeep of water bodies was a must as per the High Court and Supreme Court order and under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
