Five teachers from central districts bag national award

President to honour them in New Delhi on Teacher's Day


Award carries merit certificate, cash prize of Rs.25,000


TIRUCHI: Five out of the 15 primary school teachers selected from Tamil Nadu for the National Award to Teachers 2010 belong to the Central districts.

The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) has issued a communication to the Secretary, School Education Department, that 15 teachers from 13 districts in the State have been selected for the award. The President, Pratibha Patil, will honour them at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 5, Teacher's Day. The award carries a certificate of merit, a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and a silver medal.

The scheme is implemented by the MHRD's Department of School Education and Literacy to recognise the exemplary services of school teachers teaching at primary and secondary levels. This time, the MHRD instructed the States and Union Territories to give suitable representation to lady teachers, observing that their representation has not been adequate.

Classroom teachers with 15 years of regular teaching experience and principals/ headmasters with 20 years of regular teaching service were eligible for this award. For the special award category, the mandatory service was 10 years and 15 years for teachers and school heads respectively. P. Veerappan, Professor, Regional Institute of Education, Mysore, was the Central Government nominee for Tamil Nadu to finalise the candidates.

The five awardees from the central districts are K. Pannirselvam, Head Master, Municipal Middle School, Kottaiyoor, Melacauvery Post, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District; A. Karuppaiyan, Head Master, Panchayat Union Primary School, Neduvasal North, Neduvasal East, Alangudi Taluk, Pudukkottai District; R. Visalakshi, Head Mistress, Thanjammal Memorial Primary School, Cantonment, Tiruchi District; K. Ramasamy, Panchayat Union Primary School, Kodangipatty, Kadavur Block, Karur District; and V. Rajakumari, Head Mistress, Panchayat Union Elementary School, Vilakkudi, Thiruthuraipoondi Union, Thiruvarur District.
