Three chain snatching incidents reported

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: The city saw three chain snatching incidents on Wednesday, leading to a call from City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari to step up policing especially during peak hours.

In one of the incidents, Amutha Kumari of Ganapathy was robbed of her 4.5-sovereign gold chain when two persons on a motorcycle intercepted her and snatched the ornament from her neck as she was walking along the Vellaikinar road.

In another incident, a 5.5-sovereign gold chain was snatched from Devi of Sai Baba Colony by two persons on a motorcycle. The third incident was of Maheswari (30), staying in an eye-hospital hostel, who was robbed of her 5.5-sovereign gold chain when she was walking along the road in Peelamedu.

Similar incidents also took place on Tuesday, when two cases of chain snatching were reported from Peelamedu.

Following this, City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari has ordered for visible policing during the peak hours, especially from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. He has asked for police jeeps and motor cycle squads to patrol the roads besides posting police personnel in uniform and civil dress in pockets that are prone to crime apart from shopping areas and bus stands.

Visible policing is the only deterrent to end such incidents of crime, he told reporters.

House burgled

Burglars broke into the house of Subramanian (39) of Aruvangadu in Karumathampatti area on Wednesday night and decamped with 19 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 15,000 cash. Investigations are on.
