KOLKATA: The West Bengal Government has “decided in principle” to recognise around 10,000 madrasas but without offering financial assistance because of the grim fiscal situation the State finds itself in, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Friday. Details of how their authorities could formally apply for recognition would be published in an advertisement notice to be issued by the government. Describing it as a “revolutionary decision”, the Chief Minister said recognition would enable these madrasas to avail themselves of various Central schemes, some of which would benefit them financially as well. “So far the rules were that recognition is accorded to those madrasas which have got financial assistance from the State government. But as we are presently not being able to provide them the assistance because of financial problems, we will be granting them recognition so that they can avail themselves of the various Central schemes madrasas are entitled to,” Ms. Banerjee said, adding, “These madrasas should not be denied the benefit of Central schemes simply because the State government, given that its coffers have virtually been left empty by the previous government, is not in a position to provide them financial assistance now.”
