Time for celebrations at Sarojini Nagar Vinayak Mandir

J. Venkatesan

New Delhi: The Swarna Bhandhana Kumbabhishekam of Sree Vinayaka Mandir at Sarojini Nagar here will be performed on Sunday, June 19. The golden jubilee celebrations begin today with a music concert.

The temple is unique for the reasons that Lord Vinayaka popularly known as Ganesha is installed with his two wives called Siddhi and Buddhi which is one of the rarest in the country as at most places Lord Ganesha is installed alone as a Brahmachari. Siddhi and Buddhi are Manasa putris of Brahma, the former signifying the fulfilment and latter wisdom. This episode finds a place in Ganesha puranam in Rudra Samhita of Shiva Puranam.

According to T.S.R. Murthy, President of Sree Vinayaka Mandir Committee (SVMC), the South Indian Community in the 1950s felt the necessity to have a Ganesh Mandir in Sarojini Nagar. The SVMC was formed in 1953 and the present temple was built in 1961 and kumbabhishekam was performed in August 1961. From a humble beginning the Mandir has grown steadily and it has Vigrahas for Lord Hanuman and navagrahas. In 1983 Swayambu Linga of Lord Shiva was installed and consecrated.

To mark the completion of its 50 years, the temple has decided to perform Swarna Jayanthi Kumbabhishekam on June 19.

The golden jubilee celebrations will start today, with Nama Sankirtanam by FMC Bhajan Mandali, Kolkata. On this Sunday, there will be Jai Veena Vinayak, fusion instrumental music followed by a vocal music concert by eminent musician O.S. Arun on June 13. On June 14, Veeramani Raju from Chennai will render devotional music. On June 15, there will be bhakti rang by Pt. Lalit Kumar and party. It will be followed by Abhang Bhajan by Smt. MandakiniUpadhye, Bhakti Rasa Sarita Samaj on June 16.

On June 17 and 18, various rituals and homams will be performed and on June 19, the Swarna Jayanthi Kumbabhishekam will be performed amid chanting of vedic hymns and mantras.
