HYDERABAD: Five fishermen from each of the 508 coastal villages in the State prone to storms, cyclones and tsunamis will be trained in disaster management techniques, to enable them to alert people and help the administration in rescue and relief operations. The training programme is being taken up immediately as part of the State's disaster management preparedness plan as the monsoon has set in. Speaking to the media after reviewing the preparedness with officials of India Meteorological Department, Railways, and Central Water Commission, T. Radha, Commissioner, Disaster Management, and others here on Thursday, Revenue Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy said Rs. 15 crore would be provided for removing weeds and other obstructions in drainage canals. He said 158 cyclone shelters would be built, each at a cost of Rs. 3 crore, along the State's 960-km long coastline under a scheme being implemented with US assistance. These would be different from the existing 1,000 cyclone shelters, as they would be built as multipurpose community centres . Mr. Reddy disclosed that IAS officers had been appointed to 23 districts as Special Officers to monitor the situation during the flood season. Quoting the IMD, he said the State was expected to receive normal rainfall this year. It received 30.7 mm of rainfall so far compared to the normal of 22 mm.
