Eye problems are on the rise, says Minister “Loss of vision will cripple the nation's growth”
Vital care:Union Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari undergoing a check-up at the city centre of LV Prasad Eye Institute in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. VISAKHAPATNAM: Union Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari on Saturday said access to eye care should be given to all to prevent loss of vision due to cataract and glaucoma. She was speaking after inaugurating the first city centre of L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) here on VIP road. Complimenting LVPEI for setting up the unit at an easily accessible area for rendering screening for various problems, she said awareness level on eye problems should be improved to prevent avoidable loss of vision by many. Stating that eye problems were on the rise due to variety of reasons, she said timely intervention by specialists would prevent the damage to the vision. She said that during the past five years the full-fledged campus set up by LVPEI at the Health City had rendered yeoman service to many. Ms. Purandeswari said opening of the city centres in all the important cities would make access to eye care easy. Loss of vision due to cataract, glaucoma and other ailments would cripple the nation's productivity and growth. She also recalled her father N.T. Rama Rao's association with the founder of LVPEI and said the veteran film producer was responsible for a giving a platform to NTR to act in films. LVPEI Chairman G.N. Rao said they had decided to set up a number of city centres in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Bhubaneswar to enable more patients to undergo out-patient services at a convenient place. Only those needed surgeries and advanced procedures needed to visit the hospital located a little far away from the city centre. Dr. Rao said they would be completing fifth year in launching their unit at the Health City on July 7 and as of now they had rendered out-patient service to 2.5 lakh people. LVPEI Vizag Director Merle Fernandes, paediatric ophthalmologist Virender Sachdeva and Administrator Anjaneyulu spoke.
