On track: Work on the construction of platform shelters at the Tiruverambur railway station in progress

TIRUCHI: Tiruverambur railway station due to its prime location is frequented by hundreds of students, office-goers, industrial workers and general public. Various organisations have been complaining about lack of infrastructure facilities in this important station that falls on the Tiruchi–Chennai main line section.

Pleas made in this regard have evoked response from the Tiruchi Railway Division authorities, who have launched various developmental works worth over Rs.2 crore, much to the delight of people from different sections of the society. The works are in various stages of completion.

The station always wears a busy look and is used by a large number of employees of BHEL, its ancillary units, industrial units functioning in the SIDCO industrial estate and in Ariyamangalam, fabrication units, students and staff of NIT-T, Government Catering Institute, Government Arts College, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Government Polytechnic College and ITI etc.

The non-provision of shelter on the platforms, foot over bridge and other basic infrastructure facilities in such a busy railway station hitherto has been a matter of concern. The Railways sanctioned Rs. 30 lakh for the construction of platform shelter to a length of 32 meters and Rs. 29 lakh for the construction of foot over bridge.

The works on the construction of shelter to a length of 32 meters and the foot over bridge, undertaken by the Tiruchi Railway Division, are apace. The Tiruchi division has planned to extend the platform shelter to a length of 72 meters at a cost of Rs. 54 lakh.

The main entrance to such a busy railway station is very narrow and the parking lot is totally inadequate, complain general public. Now it has been proposed to have separate roads for entry and exit of the passengers.

For this purpose an additional road will be laid, for which a part of the railway quarters has already been demolished, according to railway sources.

The remaining portion of the demolished quarters site will be utilised for the setting up of a spacious two-wheeler parking lot. The existing cycle stand will be upgraded into a car parking lot, which will also have circulating area along with drain facility and the booking office too will be extended.

The travelling public have whole heartedly welcomed the above projects and have urged the Railways to take initiatives for the completion of the projects on time.

Meanwhile, P.Kumar, Tiruchi MP, recently inspected the Tiruverambur railway station and the ongoing developmental works, along with S. Senthilkumar, MLA. Mr. Kumar told The Hindu that he had already spoken to P.V.Vaidialingam, Divisional Railway Manager, on the need for expediting the ongoing works and creating more facilities.

The DRM and Mr. Kumar have planned to conduct joint inspection of the station shortly. Mr. Kumar has also pleaded for setting up of a passenger reservation system (PRS) at Tiruverambur Railway Station. Along with Mr. Kumar, the Train Travellers Welfare Association and other organisations too have appealed for this facility.

If PRS could not be established, an IUTS (integrated unreserved ticketing system) facility should be set up here, says Raman, a retired central government officer and a resident of Kailash nagar near Tiruverambur.

He has also pleaded for removal of encroachment on the road leading to the station.

When contacted Mr. Vaidialingam, DRM, said that he inspected the ongoing development works in Tiruverambur Railway Station on Friday. All the works are progressing at a fast pace.

The shelter construction work will be completed with in a fortnight and the foot over bridge in two months time.

He said that the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has extended a helping hand in executing three projects under its Corporate Social Responsibility scheme, including putting up a garden in front of the station building, laying the road and illuminating the same, at an outlay of Rs. 12 lakh.
