MCD wants its schools back

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's education department has written to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit demanding that the 400 middle level schools taken away by the Delhi Government under an agreement in 1970 be returned to the civic body for “better implementation” of the Right to Education Act. It also demanded additional funds for the Act's thorough implementation that would require additional buildings, staff, teachers and senior officials.

The letter was written by MCD Education Committee chairman Mahinder Nagpal who stated that the move would “enable the up-gradation of MCD primary schools up to middle school level for implementation of the RTE Act in toto.”

Dr. Nagpal said: “The MCD would require additional buildings for providing education up to middle level and for the purpose our school buildings are being surveyed to access the possibility of constructing additional floor.”

According to Dr. Nagpal, the Education Committee also held a meeting on the issue.

“It was unanimously decided to demand these schools back from the Delhi Government as well as ask for additional funds and resources for implementation of the Right to Education Act, 2009 in toto. The MCD is making every possible effort to educate each and every citizen. However the paucity of funds is an obstacle in the implementation of Act,” he added.
