Karwar: The responsibility of the parents is to provide good education to their children and make them responsible citizens. Child labour is an offence and everybody should work towards its eradication, Pallavi R. civil judge and the first class magistrate of Haliyal, has said.
She was speaking at a meeting in Haliyal on Sunday to mark World Child labour Eradication Day. The meeting was organised by Kanunu Seva Samiti, Bar Association, Women and Child Welfare Department and the Police Department.
Poverty, lack of knowledge, financial constraints, negligence about children and illiteracy were the main reasons for child labour, she said.
She asked parents and the departments concerned to make use of various schemes of the Government to eradicate the menace of child labour.
Suneel Gaonkar headmaster of the MLA's Model School, said many parents forced their children to work because of poverty. The Government had introduced many schemes for poor children. The meal scheme, free books and hostel facility were available for poor students, he added.
He demanded that the anti-child labour law be enforced properly.
Umesh Shet, police circle inspector, and Anis Mujavar, sub-inspector of police, explained the measures taken by the Police Department to contain child labour. Advocate Azeem Mujavar and Prakash Angadi spoke. The meeting was presided over by C.V. Nuchambi president of the Bar Council. Advocate Santosh Habbu welcomed the gathering.
