BIJAPUR: Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanshetty has instructed district-level officials to ensure the safety of residents in low-lying areas and river banks during monsoon. Presiding over a preparatory meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Sunday, he instructed the City Municipal Council commissioner to take steps to clean all storm water drains in the city and ensure that water was not accumulated in low-lying areas. He also instructed all the departments to ensure that there would be enough foodgrain and other essential commodities. The meeting also directed tahasildars of all the five taluks to keep track of the inflow into the two rivers and sound an alert in advance in case of a possibility of floods. The Deputy Commissioner also said that some education institutions in the district were collecting donations from parents even after strict instructions against such practice. He appealed to the people to co-operate with the authorities concerned to tackle this menace. “Strict action would be taken against institutions involved in collecting donations,” he added. Additional Deputy Commissioner G.S. Jiddimani, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer A.N. Patil, Assistant Commissioner Suresh Jirle and other officials were present.
