Star presence:Actor Vikram planting a sapling to mark the inauguration of the ‘Green Corridor' at Siruthuli Noyyal Life Centre on Sunday. Managing Trustee, Siruthuli, Vanitha Mohan is in the picture. COIMBATORE: Siruthuli and Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore on Sunday launched ‘Green Corridor', an initiative to plant and nurture 1,000 trees. Actor Vikram planted a sapling at the Siruthuli Noyyal Life Centre, the Siruthuli office, to mark the inauguration. Green Corridor is part of ‘Pasum Pulari, which is a year long afforestation programme to commemorate the International Year of Forests, as declared by the United Nations. It is also to celebrate the 80 {+t} {+h} birthday of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Throughout 2011, the organisers will plant 1,04,572 trees in and around the city. Bicycle rally The organisers of the event conducted a bicycle rally, which started at 9.30 a.m. from the Indian Red Cross Society building. They also conducted a poster design competition on the theme, ‘My Vision for Green Coimbatore.' With assistance from the Southern Railway, Siruthuli and RAAC will create a green corridor along the railway line, near the Siruthuli office, for two km by planting around 1,000 trees.
