Central team impressed by micro-finance projects

ALAPPUZHA: The Kudumbasree movement in Mararikulam got a new lot of fans on Saturday. A 31-strong team of deputy secretaries from the Union government, who were on a study tour to the State, returned with the opinion that the Kudumbasree mission should ideally be a role model for all such micro-finance endeavours across the country.

The team, which arrived in Mararikulam, known as the ‘headquarters' of the Kudumbasree movement in Alappuzha district, spent more than half a day interacting with the women of the movement, visiting their enterprises and knowing the nuances of how the Kudumbasree functioned to empower women here.

A sewing unit in Mararikulam North panchayat was the first stop, after which the team headed to the godown and sales outlets of ‘Maari,' the branded version of Kudumbasree products at Kanjikuzhy.

Purchasing various products from the outlets, the team then had a hands-on feeling of a weekly meeting of an ‘Ayalkootam', where they interacted with the members, taking down notes on how the micro-finance movement helped them set up their businesses and stand on their own feet.

A couple of farms under the recently launched mushroom farming project of the movement in Kanjikuzhy and Muhamma panchayats too impressed the visitors, who said the decentralised decision-making system and idea of empowerment at the grassroots level was a model to be taken up by all other States.
