Saravana Krishnan wins

Chennai: Saravana Krishnan claimed top honours in the CPCL-Manali FIDE-rated chess tournament after settling for a draw on the top board against Arun Karthik in the tenth and final round on Sunday. Four players finished on 8.5 points, but Saravana Krishnan claimed the title due to a better tie-break score.

Important results (10th round): Saravana Krishnan (8.5 pts) drew with Arun Karthik (8.5), Ram S. Krishnan (7.5) lost to Ramanathan Balasubramaniam (8.5), M. Kunal (8.5) bt Pradeep Kumar (7), C.H. Savetha (8) bt Vinoth Kumar (7), T.R. Shanmuganathan (8) bt Roshan Rangarajan (7).

Final standings: 1. Saravana Krishnan, 2. Arun Karthik, 3. Ramanathan Balasubramaniam, 4. M. Kunal, 5. T.R. Shanmuganathan .

India Post Cup cricket

Department of Posts (Tamil Nadu Postal Circle) will organise India Post Cup 2011, an inter-institutional invitation cricket tournament, from June 13 to 17, it was announced at a press conference on Sunday.

Speaking to the media, Chief Postmaster General Shanthi Nair said the tournament, which would be organised under the aegis of the BCCI, would have six teams (BSNL, Air India, Income Tax, RBI, Services and India Post) taking part , with the winner and the runner-up set to take home Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 50,000 respectively. Man-of-the-Match awards for individual matches and a Man-of-the-Tournament award would also be given away, it was announced.

The matches, which will be played in the 40 overs-a-side format, will be held at Presidency College grounds (Marina) and Vivekananda College grounds. The last edition of the tournament was held in Kolkata with BSNL emerging as the winner.

Dakshin Dare rally flagged off

The third edition of the Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare rally was flagged off from the Besant Nagar beach here on Sunday.

The five-day rally, organised in partnership with Motorsport Inc., will commence on Monday from Sriperumbudur and traverse through Coimbatore, Ooty and Coorg before culminating at Bangalore.

Ninety five participants, including 15 bikers, will take part in the event conducted in two different formats – Ultimate and Endurance. Spread over 11 special stages, participation in the 2100 kilometre-long rally is open to all.

“Dakshin Dare is yet another initiative which brings the thrill of motorsports to the doorsteps of enthusiasts in South India. Another important purpose is to promote controlled and safe driving,” said Manohar Bhat, Commercial Business Head, South, Maruti Suzuki India.
