Anirban, Maitreyi win

Bangalore: Anirban Roy Chowdhury and Maitreyi Bailoor emerged men's and women's champions respectively as the Ultratech State-ranking table tennis tournament concluded at the Cantonment Rail Club here on Monday. Chowdhury avenged his quarterfinal defeat to South Western Railway teammate D. Sagayaraj at Dharwad last week, with an authoritative 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 13-11, 13-11 victory here to grab the title. Bailoor, meanwhile, clawed her way back from a five-point deficit in the final game to triumph 11-9, 8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-4, 7-11, 12-10 over Aishwarya R. Bidri.

Chowdhury, participating in only his second competition since his switch to Karnataka state from West Bengal earlier this year, looked the sharper of the two finalists on the day. The 22-year-old took the first game after a series of engrossing rallies that saw Sagayaraj commit more than one unforced error.

The latter, although not entirely free of mistakes, responded with some wonderfully controlled shots to clinch the second game. That, eventually, was to be his only success in the match. Sagayaraj lost the next game 4-11, before surrendering one-point leads in the final two games.

Chowdhury took full advantage of his opponent's often-wayward backhand in that period to register an easier-than-anticipated victory.

Meanwhile, at the venue on Sunday, the Karnataka Table Tennis Association honoured the State's medal-winners from the National championships of 2009 and 2010. Those felicitated were 2010 silver medallists Shreyal K. Telang (also bronze-2009), Akshay Mahunta, V.P. Charan and Vedanth M. Urs, and 2009 bronze medallists R. Harshith and Sunand Vasan.

The two sets of players were awarded cash prizes of Rs.3000 and Rs.2000 respectively, along with a racquet and rubber of their choice.

The results (all finals): Men: Anirban Roy Chowdhury bt D. Sagayaraj 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 13-11, 13-11.

Youth boys: Shreyal K. Telang bt Sunand Vasan 9-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-3, 11-3, 12-10.
