Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: The Janardhanpuram villagers are up in the arms against the pollution of Ryve's canal, which is their main source of drinking water. They marched to the Sub Collectors' office here to protest and lodge complaint on Wednesday. Villagers led by Kondapalli Kumar Reddy and T. Ramaiah took out a procession raising slogans against the pollution caused by Vijayawada people. Exhibiting the samples – contaminated water and sludge – drawn from the canal, they said animal carcasses, polythene carry bags were dumped, and sewer and sullage were let out into the canal. More than 10 villages, including Janardhanpuram, in Nandivada mandal were dependent on Ryve's canal for drinking purposes. The sewer etc., were being let out into the canal indiscriminately, they said. Submitting a memorandum to Sub Collector S. Venkat Rao, they urged him to take necessary steps to free the canal from pollution. Mr. Rao assured them that he would take all possible action. He, however, suggested them to appraise the situation to district Collector S.A.M. Rizvi. The villagers alleged that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation was causing colossal loss to villagers with its indifferent attitude. The Ryve's canal was turned into a dumping yard by releasing the urban waste generated in One Town. The polluted water was reaching our village through Dosapadu channel. Pathetically, the canal, which flows 36 km, is drinking water source for villages in Kankipadu, Unguturu, Pdaparupudi, Gudivada, Nandivada, Uyyuru mandals in the district. The polluted water joins Kolleru Lake, they said.
