THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Cooperation will take up a pilot project for e-governance in the department using free software, said Minister for Cooperation C.N. Balakrishnan here on Tuesday. A selected district and taluk offices in the district would be networked with the headquarters as part of the pilot project to be implemented as part of the 100-day programme of the department. The software would be capable of aiding various functions of the department such as registration of cooperatives, revenue collection, audit, and handling of cases. It would also have an information system pertaining to the department. The Minister said that audit arrears payable to cooperatives, especially coir, handloom, and Scheduled Caste, and women's cooperatives, would be cleared during the next 100 days. The Consumerfed would open 180 supermarkets, 15 Triveni supermarkets, four mobile supermarkets, and 2 floating supermarkets during the period. New coffee houses would be opened at Guruvayur and Punalur. Mr. Balakrishnan announced that a pharmacy college would be started under the Cooperative Hospital Federation considering the shortage of pharmacists in the State. About 60 students would be admitted initially. A cardiac care centre and blood bank would be set up at the Punnapra cooperative hospital. The Minister said that he was not in favour of dissolution of governing bodies of district cooperatives banks just because of change in government. It was his personal view that dissolution on political grounds was not a good practice. However, the United Democratic Front had not taken a policy decision on the matter. Governing bodies would be dissolved if there were financial irregularities.
