SOCIAL ENGINEERING:Collector Anu George flagging off an rally which aims at creating awarness of ill-effects of early marriage in Ariyalur on Thursday. ARIYALUR: Ariyalur district is the first in the State to start a door-to-door awareness campaign to prevent early marriage and sensitise public to the disadvantages in marrying off girls at a young age. On Thursday, Collector Anu George inaugurated a rally as part of the awareness campaign for which family welfare workers from eight districts, workers and staff of the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare from the district, and employees of non-government organisations were roped in. Girls must progress utilising the educational opportunities. They get mentally and physically matured only after attaining 21 years, she said, appealing to the public to play a role in preventing early marriages. Ms.Anu George was accompanied by the Deputy Director of Family Welfare Jeganathan; Joint Director of Public Health Services and Family Welfare, Perambalur, Gunagomathy; and Deputy Director of Public Health Services Mohan; Assistant Director Mohan and other senior officials. The Collector also inspected the tank at Hastinapuram panchayat in Ariyalur district where desilting was in progress under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, and checked the attendance register. At J.Thathanur village, Ms.Anu George scrutinised the register to determine the promptness of the system to respond to applications pertaining to patta transfer, and birth and death. She also inspected the nearby ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) Centre and determined the adequacy of lavatory facility. Inspecting the sanitation condition at the Government Adi Dravida Welfare Elementary School at T.Keezhaveli in Jayankondam Union, the Collector instructed officials and the headmaster to rectify shortcomings. She made an assessment if the food was prepared and supplied hygienically at the ICDS centre in the village.
