UNESCO for developing Hassan district as a tourism destination

Staff Correspondent

UNESCO has prepared a draft plan in this regard

Committee set up to identify land for science centre in Hassan city

Hassan: Deputy Commissioner K.G. Jagadish on Thursday said the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had prepared a draft plan to develop Hassan district as a tourism destination site.

Speaking at a ‘Meet the press' programme organised by the Working Journalists Association here, Dr. Jagadish said development of a “tourism destination site” includes conserving heritage, providing basic infrastructure for tourists and involving local people in harmonious development of the place. UNESCO had worked out a comprehensive plan in this regard in consultation with the district administration. It covered almost 75 per cent of the district. The plan had given enough attention to conserving temple architecture, folk arts and the unique cuisine of the district, the Deputy Commissioner said.

The plan also includes a proposal to make it compulsory for people living in the neighbourhood of temples to remodel their dwellings on the lines of temple architecture. “We need to convince the public for implementing this…,” he said.

Dr. Jagadish said the plan would be finalised after consultations with UNESCO. After this, the Government would mobilise funds for implementing the plan.

He said a committee had been constituted to identify land for setting up a science centre in the city. He had asked the committee members to visit science centres in places such as Dharwad and Belgaum before finalising the design of the structure in Hassan.

Many industrialists who were allotted land for setting up industries in Hassan had not set up the units yet. The district administration would allot such unutilised land for those interested in setting up industries, the Deputy Commissioner said.
