Tirupati-Madurai Express to stop at six stations

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The biweekly Tirupati-Madurai Express will stop at Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam and Kodaikanal Road on an experimental basis, for six months from July 1, it has been submitted before the Madras High Court.

Following this, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam disposed of a public interest litigation petition filed by K. Rajendran of Mayiladuthurai seeking a direction to railway authorities to stop the Madurai-Tirupati Express at Mayiladuthurai Junction.

The petitioner submitted that before 2006, the rail route between Vellore and Villupuram and Villupuram and Mayiladuthurai was metre gauge. Prior to the conversion of the line into broad gauge, the Madurai-Tirupati Express used to halt at Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram, Thirukoilur and Tiruvannamalai, benefiting pilgrims.

After conversion, it was made a bi-weekly service causing inconvenience to public. The train did not stop at Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram and Tiruvannamalai. The Railways, in its notification dated June 7, stated that the board had approved halts for the train at Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam and Kodaikanal Road for six months from July 1.
