Punjab thrashes Bihar

Bhopal: Punjab routed Bihar 9-0 to storm into the semifinals of Hockey India's inaugural men's senior National championship here on Thursday.

Prabhdeep Singh scored three goals, Manpreet Singh contributed two while Satbir Singh, Sarvanjit Singh, Ranjodh Singh and Harpreet Singh scored a goal each in the lop-sided first quarterfinal at the Aish Bagh stadium.

It took Punjab 23 minutes to break Bihar's resolute defence when Manpreet converted a penalty corner.

Thereafter, Punjab scored three goals within six minutes to go into the breather with a resounding 4-0 lead.

The scenario was no different in the second half as Punjab toyed with Bihar's defence and pumped in five more goals to become the first team to secure a place in the semifinals.

Of Punjab's nine goals, two came from penalty corners while the remaining seven were field goals. — PTI
