Mamata ready for maiden Delhi visit as Chief Minister

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to go to New Delhi on Saturday for the first time since assuming office as Chief Minister of West Bengal on May 20.

Ms. Banerjee is expected to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well as United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Various issues related to the situation in the State are likely to be discussed during these meetings.

The Chief Minister is also expected to hold talks with Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on a special package for the State Government in view of the grim fiscal situation it finds itself in presently.

There is also likelihood of her calling on Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram to discuss, among other issues, the situation in the Darjeeling hills. The State Government had earlier this month signed an “official-level agreement” with the leadership of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha after which Ms. Banerjee had said that tripartite talks involving the Centre would be held at the earliest.
