CHENNAI: A few beggars and mentally ill persons were removed from various parts of the city and taken to the Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet, on Thursday as part of Chennai Corporation's rehabilitation programme. A total of 12 persons found begging near traffic signals on arterial roads, near the Central railway station and Egmore were taken to the hospital for treatment. Mayor M. Subramanian said the civic body had so far rehabilitated 1,130 beggars and persons with mental illness since April 2010. They were also given food and clothes. While 270 of them were treated at Institute of Mental Health and government hospitals, 456 were reunited with relatives. A total of 365 persons had been admitted to old age homes, he said. People are requested to call the civic body's toll free helpline 1913 or 25912686 to rehabilitate any person with mental illness, said Mr.Subramanian.
