CHENNAI: The State government will come out with a sector-specific industrial policy during the Budget session of the Assembly to accelerate growth and enable Tamil Nadu to regain its leading position on the industrial map, Industries Minister C. Shanmugavelu said on Thursday.

Delivering the special address at a roundtable on ‘Retaining Tamil Nadu's edge in India's growth story,' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he said that the new policy would reflect the changed environment, remove bottlenecks, focus on automobile and auto components sectors and place Tamil Nadu in the forefront of development once again.

The new government under the leadership of Jayalalithaa had already initiated steps in this direction.

Citing the Governor's address, he said the new government would lay special emphasis on newly emerging sectors such as bio-technology, nano-technology and pharmaceuticals.

“During 2001-2006 AIADMK's regime the State had surplus power. But, industrial development was affected in the next five years (during the term of the previous DMK government) due to power shortage and industrialists shifted to Gujarat and other states. We are taking steps to address the increasing demand for energy and water, provide good roads and improve connectivity.”

Pointing out that most of the industrial units were established in and around Chennai, he asked industrialists to set up new units in different parts of the State and in southern districts to offset regional imbalances.

“You can start the new units with confidence and we assure you of enough power and incentives. We want to place Tamil Nadu as one of the leading States of the country,” he said.

It was the first interaction of the Industries Minister with the chamber representatives.

He will be meeting the industry and trade representatives in Coimbatore soon.

Earlier, in his welcome address, CII Tamil Nadu chairman, N.K. Ranganath, said that Tamil Nadu was at the cross roads and to maintain its leading edge, focus should be on automobile, auto components, textile, machine tools and solar energy.

CII Southern Region chairman, T.T. Ashok said that top priority should be accorded to address the power crisis and shortage of skilled labourers.
