West Bengal Legislative Council likely to be revived

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A resolution is likely to be moved in the West Bengal Assembly on June 28 by the Trinamool Congress for reviving the Legislative Council in the State.

Sources said here on Friday that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the Trinamool Congress chief, is considering the setting up of the Legislative Council to accommodate members of the civil society.

Ms. Banerjee had been speaking of reviving the Legislative Council even before the recent Assembly elections in which the Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance was voted to power.

A resolution for abolishing the State Legislative Council was passed in the State Assembly in March 1969. Subsequently, Parliament passed the West Bengal Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, 1969, with effect from August 1969.
