Rain improves storage in reservoirs in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Rain continued for the second day on Saturday improving the storage in reservoirs in the district. The downpour on Friday night resulted in power failure at a number of places in Coimbatore city.

The rainfall recorded at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday is as follows: Upper Nirar 138 mm, Lower Nirar 75, Valparai 55, Pollachi 17, Manacadavu 23, Sircarpathy 12, Peelamedu Airport 9.05, Mettuppalayam 2.01, Pollachi taluk 2, Sulur 3, TNAU 18, Chincona 75, Chinnakallar 138, Valparai taluk 53, Coimbatore South 10, Siruvani catchment 140, Siruvani foothills 80, Thondamuthur 53 and Sholayar 49 mm.

Rain continued in Pollachi and its surrounding areas on Saturday too.

Good inflow

PWD authorities said that there was a steady inflow into reservoirs and storage had crossed the 50 per cent mark.

Water is expected to be released from Sircarpathy from August once the first phase of renovation works of contour canal is completed. It will help increase the storage in Thirumurthy dam. The dam irrigates four lakh acres in four zones.The heavy rain has resulted in water flowing out of Pilloor Dam.
