U-19 football league from Tuesday

KOLKATA: The final phase of the under-19 league of I-League teams will be played here from Tuesday. In the first set of two matches on the opening day, East Bengal will play Mumbai FC and Churchill Brothers will take on JCT.

The fixtures: June 21: East Bengal vs. Mumbai FC; Churchill Brothers vs. JCT. June 23: East Bengal vs. Churchill Brothers; Mumbai FC vs. JCT. June 25: East Bengal vs. JCT; Churchill Brothers vs. Mumbai FC .

Chess meet begins

The two-day all-Bengal age-group chess tournament, jointly organised by the City Chess Forum and South Calcutta Swetamber Jain Terapanthi Sabha, got underway at Terapanth Bhavan at Paddapukur on Saturday. A total of 238 players are participating in the tournament. Three rounds were gone through on the opening day.

Top positions: U-15: Khushi Dharewa, Raunak Mandal, Sumit Kumar and Aditya Chowdhury (3 points each); Suvankar Maity and Ratul Dey (2.5).

U-13: Kaustav Bhattacharya, Debankan Dhara, Chandreyee Hajra, Sankalan Bharati and Ritika Doshi (3 each); Debdeep Das, Subhradeep Aich, Tamojit Poddar and Sayantan Chandra (2.5).

U-11: Ritabroto Ganguly, Rajdeep Sarkar, Srijit Paul and Anustoop Biswas (3 each); Aneek Das, Sudarshan Mitra, Soumyaditya Saha and Shradha Kucheria (2.5).

U-9: Avijaan Roy Choudhury, Sanika Sengupta and Moloy Deb Roy (3 each); Dipanjan Choudhury, Samyak Dutta, Prem Arpan Tirkey and Soumya Sardar (2.5)

U-7: Soumma Chakraborty, Srijita Sarkar, Mrittika Das, Sanket Chakravarty and Samip Roy (3 each); Rajrshi Mondal, Arpan Das, Bristy Mukherjee, Harsh Apurva Tirkey, Rupam Paik, Ronit Biswas, Mehendi Sil, Oushnik Chatterjee, Shilajit Mukherjee, Soutrik Moitra, Pratyay Chowdhury and Suvam Mondal (2.5 each) .

Two schools qualify

Behala Parnasree Bidyamandir qualified for the J.L. Nehru hockey tournament at Delhi after beating Baruipur High School 1-0 in boys' event of the fourth junior Bengal hockey Challenge Shield (under-15).

In the third junior Bengal hockey meet for girls (under-17), Jhapandanga Sabitri Balika Vidyalaya made it to the Delhi meet defeating Benachiti Netaji Vidyalaya High School, Durgapur, 1-0. Harchapra High School, Nadia, took the third place in the boys' group and Kanaipur Sree Guru High School, Rishra, was third in the girls' side.

State felicitation

The State Sports Minister, Mr. Madan Mitra, on Saturday said his ministry would identify and award the best sportsperson of the State covering all disciplines.

On Sunday, the State government would felicitate all those who excelled in the 34th National Games held in Jharkhand earlier this year, Santosh Trophy winning Bengal team and mountaineers who successfully climbed Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga peaks.
