Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has sanctioned Rs.24 crore to lay underground pipelines for distribution of water from sewerage treatment plants (STPs) to irrigate areas around 36 small towns in the State. The decision was taken by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal over the weekend at a high-level meeting to review the status of the ongoing Rivers Cleaning Project, an official spokesperson said here on Saturday. Mr. Badal directed the Soil and Water Conservation Department to immediately start the work in Jalandhar, Phagwara (North), Kapurthala and Nangal where STPs had already been made functional. He further directed the Punjab Pollution Control Board to get the quality of the treated water tested by recognised laboratories so that it is safe for irrigation. The Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board is committed to completing the task in 18 towns around the Sutlej river, 11 around the Beas and 16 around the Ghaggar river by November 30, 2011, an official said. The Chief Minister also directed local authorities to arrange land for early setting up of an STP in Zirakpur. - PTI
