THRISSUR: Various programmes were held in the district on Sunday to observe Reading Day. The Government of Kerala observes June 19 as Vayanadinam (Reading Day) to commemorate the contributions of P. N. Panicker to the cause of literacy, education and library movement.

Inaugurating the observance at the Juvenile Home here, poet Engandiyur Chandrasekharan said that there was no better to way to inform and expand one's mind than the habit of reading. “Reading requires practice and diligence. It is a rewarding experience,” he said. Thrissur taluk Library Council secretary Jayan Avanur also spoke.

Addressing a meeting organised in remembrance of P. N. Panicker at the Appan Thampuram Smaraka Vayanasala, critic K. P. Sankaran said that that reading should be a habit as essential as eating. “Reading is the key to unlock the secrets of one's mind,” he said. He stated that the quality of Malayalam writing was deteriorating. “Children should have a passion for their mother tongue. They should strive to protect Malayalam,” he said. Four books for children, written by Kesavan Vellikulangara, were released on the occasion.
