Final leg of IVL from today

V.V. Subrahmanyam

HYDERABAD: The final leg of the Indian Volley League will commence at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium here from Monday.

Chennai Spikers has been the dominant force so far in the inaugural edition of a concept which has become a big hit with the spectators and the players. But, despite topping the last two legs (in Chennai and Yanam) to chalk up 26 points, Chennai Spikers leads its nearest rival Hyderabad Chargers by just two points.

This should make this final round very exciting and also test the skill and endurance level of the contenders.

With the players already showing signs of fatigue due to the demanding schedule, the team which puts plays its fittest combination will be in with a better chance to clinch the championship, which has total prize money of Rs.22.5 lakh.

The overall points tally — Chennai Spikers (26), Hyderabad Chargers (24), Yanam Tigers (22), Karnataka Bulls (22), Maratha Warriors (21) and Kerala Killers (20) — presents a picture which should delight the die-hard fans.

A good mix of internationals and juniors in all the teams has given not only a new dimension to the concept but also exposed the players to new styles and techniques.

However, Hyderabad Chargers can expect support from the home crowd because of its name; it does not have too many big names in the team.

Chargers coach M.H. Kumar said there was very little to choose amongst the teams at this stage.

“It all boils down to which team shows greater mental strength and will power,” he pointed out.

Monday's matches: Kerala Killers vs Karnataka Bulls (3.30 p.m.); Hyderabad Chargers vs Maratha Warriors (5.30 p.m.) & Chennai Spikers vs Yanam Tigers (7.30 p.m.) .
