Children's safety causes worries Mayor has not acted on her promise: councillor Kozhikode: Stray dog menace has been plaguing the people of Payyanakkal, Panniyankara, and Kappakkal wards in the Kozhikode City Corporation for the past several weeks. More than half-a-dozen persons, including schoolchildren, have been bitten by stray dogs in the past week alone, they say. “People are scared to venture out, especially early in the mornings and late in the evenings,” N. Jamsheed of Payyanakkal says. Parents are worried about the safety of their children who go to schools and madrasas early in the morning, he says. “Mothers in the area are really scared to send their wards to school alone early in the morning these days,” Mr. Jamsheed, who has approached the authorities several times with the grievance, says. Complaints Residents have complained to the Health and city Corporation authorities through their councillors several times. “No measures have been taken so far,” P.V. Shamsudheen, another resident, says. A majority of the people in these areas are fisherfolk who head out to sea and the fish market early in the morning. “It is mostly these people who are at risk of being attacked by the stray dogs,” Mr. Shamsudheen says. P.V. Avaran, ward councillor of Kappakkal, says the Mayor had promised to take steps to deal with the menace when the matter was brought to the notice of the Corporation Council. “Weeks have passed since the promise and the problem has still not been addressed,” he says. Threat of stir A youth convention of the Indian Union Muslim League had also demanded that the authorities find a solution to the problem that was threatening the safety of hundreds of people. The convention had warned of a strong agitation if the authorities turned a blind eye to the issue.
