Temperature soars in city

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Residents of the city had to endure yet another hot day on Sunday. On Sunday the maximum temperature recorded in the city was 38.1 degree Celsius.

According to weather officials, the intense heat that the city has been experiencing for the past four days is due to lack of sea breeze.

Y.E.A. Raj, Deputy Director General, Meteorology, said in the last four days, the maximum temperature had more or less hovered around 38 degree Celcius. On Saturday, it was 38.2 degrees. “In the month of May, the temperature would be around 40 degrees but sea breeze would set in by afternoon. But for the past few days, the temperature has been around 38 degrees but there has been no sea breeze.

The maximum temperature is reached around noon and the heat continues to be retained almost up to 5 or 6 p.m. The relief normally available due to sea breeze has not been generally available,” Mr. Raj explained. Saturday's rain, which began around 8 p.m. was sporadic and light, but cooled the city, providing relief from the heat. But the same was not the case on Sunday, he said. “No clouding and continuous exposure to sun's radiation and strong southwest winds inhibiting sea breeze onset are causing the discomfort. But the maximum temperature has not gone up,” Mr. Raj added.
