MANGALORE: Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker N. Yogish Bhat said on Saturday that the government would work towards finalising and notifying the State Rules for the implementation of the Right to Education Act 2009. He was responding to a question during a media conference, to disseminate information about the progress of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Mangalore taluk in the last 10 years. Asked if there was any move to bring the schools run by the Social Welfare Department, Backward Classes and Minorities Department, and the Integrated Tribal Welfare Project under the Department of Public Instruction to monitor the quality of education, Mr. Bhat said that if there was such a demand, the government would consider it. Moodabidri MLA K. Abhaychandra Jain said in the last decade Rs. 13.56 crore had been spent under the SSA. On all indicators such as school buildings, teacher training, parent training, and construction of ramps for children with disabilities, the SSA had achieved nearly 100 per cent. There are 136 primary schools in the district, and 846 teaching posts out of 885 have been filled. Fire extinguishers have been installed in schools at a cost of Rs. 2,000 each and ramps at a cost of Rs. 6,000 each. As many as 402 children studying in schools run by the Social Welfare, BCM and ITDP departments and 18 Koraga children had been taken on an educational tour of the district. As many as 1,157 children with disabilities were given integrated education through the SSA.
