Directors' association election held

CHENNAI: Election for the office-bearers of Tamil Nadu Film Directors' Association was held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. here on Sunday with 1,229 members casting their votes.

Brisk voting was seen from 8 a.m. at the Film Musicians' Union at Vadapalani in which directors including K. Balachander, Bharathiraja, K.S. Ravikumar, Shankar, Dharani, Partheeban, Santhana Bharathi, S.A. Chandrasekar, Sasikumar, Cheran, Ameer, R.K. Selvamani, Charan, Mishkyn, and Venkat Prabhu voted. A total of 48 persons contested for 21 posts from two teams – the United Directors Team and the Pudhiya Alai. For the post of association president, Bharathiraja and S. Murali, assistant director, were pitted against each other.

The Pudhiya Alai team only contested for the posts of executive committee members. Directors Cheran and Samudrakani were elected unopposed for the posts of vice-president and S.P. Jananathan was elected unopposed as treasurer.

Elections were held for posts including four joint secretaries and 12 executive committee members. The elected office-bearers will hold office for three years. The association has a total of 2,050 members which includes around 25 women.

The United Directors Team, whose presidential candidate is Bharathiraja, gave a 40-point manifesto which included efforts to take mediclaim policies and insurance for association members, increase in salaries of associate, assistant and other categories of assistant directors, and registration of prospective film names.
