KOLKATA: An absconding constable of the State Armed Police is suspected of having shot dead three persons in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Sunday morning, with a weapon issued to him from the armoury.
Piyush Kanti Ghosh, a constable with the 8th Battalion of the State Armed Police was last seen at 10 p.m. on Saturday night after which he has been absconding with the SLR and 50 rounds of ammunition issued to him for sentry duty, Siddhinath Gupta, the Special IG and DIG, Presidency Range told The Hindu.
Instant death
The victims, Manabendra Pal, his wife Sarbani Pal and his sister Rohini Ray were shot with the same weapon at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at a secluded spot near Ardali bazaar at Barrackpore, he said.
While Manabendra Pal and Sarbani Pal died on the spot, Rohini Ray was rushed to a hospital nearby and then later to the R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city. However, she died after being brought to the hospital, Mr. Gupta added.
The police suspect the incident was the result of a feud between the couple and Mr. Ghosh. It has come to light that there may have been relations between him and Sarbani Pal, and that he had summoned them to the spot.
“Investigations are in progress,” Mr. Gupta said.
