Culprits are SP workers: U.P. government

Lucknow: Under attack for a spate of crimes against women, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday said there was no breakdown of law and order situation, and stern and prompt action was being taken against culprits.

It alleged that Samajwadi Party workers were involved in the stabbing of a minor Dalit girl by two youths, when she resisted their attempts to rape her in Kannauj district.

“The projection that there is a law and order breakdown in the State and that criminals are free to commit crime is not right. Wherever such incidents take place, stern action has been taken by the government,” Secretary, Information, Prashant Trivedi, told reporters here.

He said that in Kannauj, where a 14-year-old girl was stabbed in her eyes, prompt action was taken. Two policemen were placed under suspension on charges of laxity.

“The two youths who attacked the girl after failing to rape her are Samajwadi Party workers,” Mr. Trivedi said.

He said one of them was arrested and raids were being carried out to arrest the other person. On the incident in Basti district where an 18-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped at gunpoint, he said an FIR was filed and efforts were on to arrest the accused.
