This Day That Age
The United States said that it would take its military advisers out of divided Laos in an attempt to turn it into a neutral nation. The offer was made to the 14-nation conference on Laos in Geneva on June 20 by Mr. Averell Harriman, chief U.S. delegate. He added that the withdrawal of U.S. advisers must be phased and co-ordinated under the supervision of neutral truce teams with the withdrawal of all other foreign forces except a group of French instructors. This would mean the removal of any Soviet or Communist North Viet Namese personnel now with the pro-Communist forces. “We trust the conference shares this view, and will act to ensure that military withdrawals are accomplished to achieve lasting peace and independence for the Government and all the people of Laos,” Mr. Harriman said.
