dated June 21, 1961: Anti-dowry Act

The Dowry Prohibition Act will come into force on July 1 according to a notification issued in the Gazette of India dated June 20. The Act extends to the whole of India except Jammu and Kashmir. The Bill received the President's assent on May 20. From July 1, the giving, taking and demanding of dowry will be offences punishable under the law. A person can be sentenced to imprisonment up to six months or to a fine which may extend to Rs. 5,000 or both. No court will take cognisance of demanding dowry except with the sanction of the State Government.
