dated June 21, 1961: Migrants from Asia

Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, Director of the Indian Institute for Population Studies, told an international migration conference in Leysin (Switzerland) that the relatively “empty” lands such as Australia, Canada, Africa and Brazil should open their doors to Asian migrants. Addressing some 200 migration experts convened by the World Council of Churches to discuss the role of the church in the integration of migrants, he said: “Once the White countries can be persuaded to accept Asian migrants, they could be put on some quota basis as the U. S. has done. Australia, for instance, would be happier and more securely situated as she is so close to Asia if she would admit Asian migrants in the same basis as she does Europeans.”
