Now ‘tags' for baggage at rail station

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Tirupati has yet again become the launch-pad for an innovative programme, which is set to take ‘luggage safety' to new heights.

In what is claimed to be the first-of-its-kind in the country, the Government Railway Police wing has come up with the concept of ‘Baggage Tag'. The visiting card-sized tag, to be affixed to the suitcases and travel bags of the passengers, will bear information such as the passenger's name, train name/number, date of travel, PNR number and coach/seat number.

On boarding the train, a passenger has to fill details to enable the sleuths keep a watch on the movement of the luggage. Any miscreant trying to sneak out with somebody else's suitcase can be caught hold of, based on the details available,” GRP Inspector S. Ramamohan told The Hindu.

The system was introduced in the Tirupati-Howrah Express last Friday, after which it was extended to the Tirupati-Machilipatnam Express and the Secunderabad-bound Narayanadri and Padmavathi Express trains.
