“Affix seal of gas agency in ration cards”

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: District Collector C.T. Manimekalai has categorically stated that the beneficiaries of the free gas connections should get the stamp/seal of the gas agency affixed in their ration cards.

Such a move is necessary because it has come to her notice that besides getting free gas connections they are also lifting kerosene, being supplied at a highly subsidised rate, through the fair price shops, the Collector said while addressing a review meeting on the Public Distribution System here on Monday.

She said that the kerosene thus obtained was being sold in the open market for a premium. The Collector also called upon the officials to intensify their vigil against smuggling of PDS rice.

She came down heavily on those salespersons who were deceiving the card holders on measurement.

“If the salespersons charge for the commodities which they do not supply in right quantity they are doing injustice to the card holders and therefore deserve punishment,” she said.

Ms. Manimekalai said that in certain areas, the fair price shops were run irregularly and in some places the shops remained closed without any valid reasons. She said that all the full time fair price shops should function regularly. The Collector also instructed the officials to extend all the welfare schemes, including free rice and supply of pulses at subsidised prices, to the inmates of the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camps at Chinna Salem and Keezhputhupattu.

District Supply Officer Shanmugham and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Ramamurthy were present.
