PUDUCHERRY: The territorial government is likely to initiate negotiations with the private medical colleges here on Wednesday to arrive at the number of seats that these institutions would allot for the government quota for the coming academic year. Officials at the Centralised Admissions Committee (CENTAC), and the Health Department, said that the meeting that was slated for last week was postponed as heads of several institutions communicated their inability to take part. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will lead the delegation of officials during the Wednesday meeting. It might be recalled that last year, 265 MBBS seats were allotted by the seven self-financing institutions to the government quota. This was four seats higher than the 261 allocated in 2009-2010. The meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of the pending approval from the Medical Council of India for the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute to admit students for the coming academic year. While the decision was expected by June 15, the MCI extended its own deadline for the issuance of the ‘Letter of Permission' to June 30 recently. Officials said that with the fate of the IGMCR still unknown, the government would try to obtain more seats from the private colleges. No extension Meanwhile, CENTAC officials said that unlike last year, the deadline for the submission of application forms by candidates will not be extended further and that the forms have to be submitted positively before the end of office hours on Wednesday.
