Erode
The water level in stood at 77.20 ft at 8 a.m. on Monday The dam was getting an inflow of 9,864 cusecs ERODE: The Lower Bhavani (LBP) Farmers Association has appealed to the State government to release water from the Bhavanisagar dam for irrigation in the LBP ayacut area on August 1, ahead of the customary date of opening of the reservoir on August 15. The earlier release of water from the reservoir would enable the farmers in the ayacut to take up the cultivation of short-term paddy crop (Kuruvai), Association President S. Nallasamy said in a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Cause for comfort Mr. Nallasamy said the Bhavanisagar dam had adequate water storage, a cause for comfort and a good reason for the release of water. The catchment areas of the dam also witnessed heavy rains, which will ensure a steady inflow to the reservoir in the days to come. Water level The water level in the reservoir stood at 77.20 ft at 8 a.m. on Monday, and the storage was 14. 248 tmcft. The dam was getting an inflow of 9,864 cusecs. Mr. Nallasamy urged the State government to make a formal announcement for the early opening of the Bhavanisagar dam, which would help farmers to start preparing their lands for cultivation. Boon for farmers The release of water in the Lower Bhavani Project canal would help farmers irrigate over two lakh acres of lands in Erode and neighbouring Tiruppur and Karur districts, he added. Mr. Nallasamy also wanted the public works department to complete the maintenance and repair works being carried out in the LBP canal quickly. Bridges The construction of bridges across the canal should also be completed quickly. The State government should engage the workers registered under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) to speed up the maintenance and repair works in the canal, he stressed.
