Ashok tells party men to move closer to people

Correspondent

They are dissatisfied with government policies, he says

Constituency-level meet held to gear up cadre for dharna on farmers' problems

Cadres told to meet impending political challenges

VIZIANAGARAM: TDP Polit Bureau member P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju asked party cadres to work in proximity with the mood of people and face political challenges ahead without fear or favour.

Speaking at the constituency-level meeting of the party on Monday, Mr. Ashok said people were dissatisfied with the government policies. Yet, TDP cadres were unable to move closer to them. The meeting was convened to gear up cadres for the scheduled dharna on farmers' problems on June 23 at Tehsildars' Offices.

Describing the Congress as a ‘tree of corruption' and the new political outfit (YSR Congress) as its branch, he cautioned cadres of impending political challenges ahead because the new outfit had been adopting vote-splitting tactics. Recalling municipal elections to Vizianagaram in 2005, he said BSP (Kolagatla Veerabhadra Swamy group that later joined the Congress), in the triangular contest, split the votes thus relegating the TDP to the second position and the Congress to the third. “The venomous branch (YSR Congress) had openly challenged TDP for a no-trust motion but it sailed with the ruling party in the election to Speaker.”

Owing to corruption developmental activities had come to a standstill, he said and quoted Volkswagen as an example. On farmers' problems, he said during the last seven years the ruling party had not been able to create additional storage space. But, TDP built warehouses by involving FCI and private entrepreneurs, he claimed. The YSR Government scrapped extension officers' posts and appointed 7,000 progressive farmers in their place. Now, farmers had not been able to get minimum support price. Seeds, fertilizers and pesticides were made available in black market. The government launched misinformation campaign saying that NREGP jacked up demand for labour. On Indira Awas Yojana housing, he said that the Central scheme was renamed as ‘Indiramma' and the beneficiaries were not able to get their bills paid. “The problems of people are innumerable and the party had discussed them all in Mahanadu and an action plan for complex issues was prepared. The party cadres have to fight with dignity,” he said. The party district general secretary I.V.P. Raju, town committee president P. Ramakrishna and others were present.
