Kawal sanctuary to become tiger reserve

Special Correspondent

Kawal to be entitled to a large quantum of funds from Centre

Two villages within the sanctuary area to be relocated to have a contiguous forest

HYDERABAD: Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar on Monday said that the Central government had in principle agreed to recognise Kawal wildlife sanctuary near Jannaram in Adilabad district as a tiger reserve.

Kawal, one of the richest teak forests that is free of human disturbance, becomes the second tiger reserve in the State after Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam stretch of forest. It is spread over 892 sq.km and located 270 km from the State capital.

Mr. Manohar told media persons here that Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh had immediately conceded a recommendation by the Legislative Committee on Wildlife and Environment Protection to convert Kawal into a tiger project.

The committee, headed by him, had visited the forest on May 30. Five other members of the panel had accompanied him when they trekked the forest.

He also said that Kawal would be entitled to a large quantum of funds from Centre following its recognition as a tiger reserve.

A portion of it would be spent on relocating two villages within the sanctuary area so as to have a contiguous forest.

A compensation of Rs. 10 lakh per earning member in a family would be paid for relocation. The two villages jointly had a population of 62, he added.

The State government offered to spend Rs. 25 crore from Vana Samrakshana Samiti funds for the development of the forest.

The Tourism Department came forward to develop the forest as an eco-tourism spot. Another proposal being considered was to release some tigers into the forest from other parts to enhance their population in the area.
