Two child labourers rescued

Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: A team comprising the officials of Rajiv Vidya Mission (RVM) and labour department rescued two child labourers, including a girl, in separate raids here on Monday.

The raids were conducted as part of a special drive to rescue child labourers and join them in special residential schools meant for deprived children.

Acting on a tip-off, the officials raided a house near Mekalabanda park in the town and rescued 11-year old D Sandhya, who was allegedly employed as a domestic maid by the tenant of the house.

The girl, believed to be an orphan, broke down before the officials and sought them to rescue her.

She complained that her employer, an engineer, and his wife subjected her to severe ordeal.

The officials shifted the girl to the special residential school for urban deprived children at Pedda Tanda in Khammam rural mandal.

In another case, the team rescued P. Ramana (13) of Kothavalasa of Srikakulum district, who was allegedly employed at a steel shop near Kaman Bazar here.

Case registered

The officials registered a case against the shop owner under the Child Labour Act. The rescued boy was also sent to a special residential school here. Assistant Commissioner of Labour, Khammam, K Ramgopal, and RVM (Alternate School) Coordinator N Tirumal Rao participated in the raids.

When contacted, Mr. Tirumal Rao said the Bala Karmika Vimukthi Shakatam, a mobile rescue team, had so far rescued 45 child labourers in the current year.

All the rescued were being enrolled in the special residential schools run by the RVM, he said and added that the representatives of non-governmental organisations were also being involved in the task of identifying and rescuing the child labourers.
