Exemption for Kannada schools hailed

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Kannada Development Authority has welcomed the Kerala government's decision to exempt Kannada-medium schools in Kasaragod and other districts of the State from compulsory teaching of Malayalam as the first language.

The previous Left Democratic Front government had issued an order making teaching of Malayalam compulsory in all schools in Kerala.

In a press release here on Monday, Mukyamantri Chandru, who heads the authority, commended Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for getting the order rescinded soon after his government came to power.

Earlier, Mr. Chandru had written to Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and Primary and Secondary Education Minister Visveshwar Hegde Kageri, appealing to them to take up the issue with their Kerala counterparts to protect the interests of Kannada-speaking people in the border areas of the State.
